Brak (or even Braque) was a title of the kings of the kingdoms of Waalo (or Oualo) & Biffeche on the Senegal River in Senegal and Mauritania in West Africa until the 19th Century. A independent Brak was a king of the Kingdom of Waalo with capital at Diourbel north of the river, & late at Nder on the west shore of Lac de Guiers. A 'Petit Brak' was a king or even feudal lord of the Kingdom of Biffeche, with his capital compound at Maka on the Senegal River, & presently at MBoubene near Saint-Louis, Senegal.
A Kingdoms of Waalo and Biffeche were labelled as 'Brak' or even 'Braque' in a bit of French maps of a vicinity, does'nt to exist as confused by owning the moorish realm of Brakna north of the Senegal River. Waalo was conquered per French in the mid-19th Century.
the Braks of Waalo were chosen from either tierce leading families of Dyoos, Teedyo & Logar, & ruled across a council consisting of varoius officials sustaining specific delegated functions. It has been claimed that a Brak of Waalo ruled across a local kinda African traditional democracy, however the rulership got definite patrilinear & matrilinear hereditary restrictions. It claimed descent from either a legendary number one Brak of Waalo & Jolof, Njajan Njay.
A word 'Brak' might derive from either a Arabic word for 'high'.
